After a hectic visit of Maputo we travelled north towards Inhambane, the second oldest town of Mozambique. There is only one "highway" that is going from Maputo al the way into the northen part of Mozambique. This highway is a 2 lane road with major pothole problems, this was kind of a challenge for our rented asian import car. That resulted in 2 lost wheel cover but i still believe some kid has stole them thinking it were rims.

From Maputo to Inhambane is about 6 hours and an other hour of the "highway" to Tofo Beach. Tofo beach is a small town that still exists because whalesharks and mata rays eat plankton in the the bay close to the beach. A lot of white Portuguese and South African people who call them self citizens of the world have build very nice sleeping facilities in the form of basic palm huts basically on the beach.

What is there to do in Tofo? Not much there are no clubs it's not a nice town with a fun market no supermarkets and not even any form of modern communication facilities. But you can just enjoy the beach, swim with whalesharks and manta rays or do some dives. And that's what we did.

After experiencing our first border passing of one of those well-known border controls of Africa we entered Swaziland. A country influenced by aids, with 40% of the population having aids. Swaziland is the number one country with the highest aids percentage.

With just 1 stop at some strange fried chicken shop, where i expected some side effects from, we raced through the county side towards the Mozambican border.

After driving for 3 hours through Swaziland we arrived at the Mozambican border. This border control was a little bit different, maybe because they refused to speak English and kept on explaining stuff to us in Portuguese and with my 5 classes of Portuguese the only thing i could do was thank him for his hospitality and service. After some bribing, don't knowing what was going on and trusting people what didn't felt good we could enter Mozambique.

We finally arrived in Maputo, what was a happy moment because we thought we could end this day in the car very soon. But we entered the city around 5 in the evening it was already starting to get dark and traffic wise the busiest moment of the day. This and the fact that in Africa it is normal to put the street names and road signs after the exit made it very difficult to find our humble sleeping place. After driving around for 2 hours, being confused if we where already on Mao Tse Tung avenue or still on Ho Chi Min street and ending up in a pretty fun but definitely not the right neighbourhood we found our hostel.

A long night of sleep and a good breakfast prepared us well enough to hit the road again towards Tofo Beach.

Back in Stellenbosch after a 3 week trip from South Africans Durban through Swaziland to the capitol of Mozambique Maputo and all the way to Tofo and Vilankulo back to South Africa to Kruger National park to end it all in Johannesburg.

The trip started on the 25th of may in Durban. Durban is the busiest harber town in South Africa positioned in Kwazulu-Natal on the coast in the Indian Ocean. This means i could finally swim in the sea, in Cape Town the sea can be less than 10 degrees. In Durban we did one scuba dive on Umkomas beach on the Aliwal Shoal, some chilling am strand, Wet and Wild water theme park and just enjoying the weather that was so much better than in Cape Town area. After Durban me and three others left the group we were with in Durban and hired a car to experience Africa.

Our first stop was St. Lucia, a touristic town around 200KM up the coast from Durban. St. Lucia is most famous of there number of wild hippo's in the area.

The stop in St. Lucia was short and after one night we were heading of the border of Swaziland.

Hiking Table Mountain...

...was really exhausting, especially because it was on of the hottest days of the last couple of weeks. 26 degrees in the shadow but there was no shadow to be found on this strange shaped mountain so it was HOT.

Hiking is not the right word for it, it was more climbing very big stair for 2 hours. Finally if you made the top of the mountain you have this beautiful view and extreme silence, the only thing you here on top is the wind.

The day started cold grey and raining but after this depressing start the sky cleared up and made it a perfect rugby day. Not to warm wet field blue sky and no direct sun, perfect. The game that i had to play was for one of the residents in Stellenbosch called Eendrag. In Stellenbosch every residents has his own tradition rules culture and of course a rugby club. Eendrag playes in the Stellenbosch residents rugby league were every resident playes against the other residents. Today i played with the second team of Eendrag against the second team of Helderberg, yesterday i also played with the third team of Eendrag against the third team of Helderberg we lost 37-0 so let's skip that one.

From the very beginning it was obvious that it was going to be a very exciting tight match. I started on the bench and the plan was that i would come in the game as flanker in the second half but after just 15 minutes one of our locks dislocated his shoulder so i had to replace him (this lock position keeps hunting me).

The game was for a long time a head to head battle with a slight lead for Helderberg. We kept trying to score and with just 10 minutes left my fellow lock got a yellow card for using his hand in the ruck what means that he had to watch us play from the side. This made it more difficult for us to score because we had a big disadvantage in the scrum and break down. But than it happened we were on the 22 meter line of Helderberg trying to find a gap to run trough, somehow we got a penalty but with a very difficult angle and 22 meters away from the poles. This was a big change to take the lead but still not an easy job, especially with the pressure because this penalty kick will give us the lead by 1 point. Buttttt he nails it straight and very high through the poles, this was also the last action of the game and we won with 11-10!!!!

Yes most of the locks are ugly but they are the pillars of the team.

Ham Hamburger

I just ate a hamburger with extra slices of ham on top of it. I thought this was really strange but when i thought of it why is it called HAMburger. This extra ham on my hamburger did not effect the taste of the burger, it was still a nice and well prepared burger but i was a bit suprised.

Already the 12th match for the Cape Town Stormers in the Super 14, and after seeing 3 of the 4 home matches in Newlands this must have been the worst of them all. Stormers played only defensive and boring rugby and one of their best players Conrad Jantjes got injured with a broken leg. The crowd was more enjoyable on the other hand, a lot of jokes and swearing to their own Stormers. like always with rugby in South Africa if a player or team plays well the fans would absolutely adore them but if they loose more than one game all that fait and love just disappears.

The 27th day of the month April in the year 2009 was the day that i celebrated my 19th living year. I was not expecting a whole lot of celebrating but it turn out really well.

Franschhoek was the destination and to be precise The Wine and Cheese Festival. The festival is a good way for smaller cheese and wine farm to represent their products. So it works like this, you buy a wine glass at the entrance for 10 Rand (E0,80) and then just hop from every wine stall of every wine farm to the other to try free wine and in between you eat a lot of good food like really good shawarma, oysters, meat and of course cheese.

The 27th of April was also a public holiday, one of those public holidays in South Africa were nobody knows why they are free but it is just a really good excuse to drink a lot of wine and eat multiple kilo's of meat. So that's what The Cheese and Wine festival was all about, it was a beautiful day great weather and the people got really drunk as you can see in the next clip.

I am now half way on my stay in Stellenbosch and it is really noticeable that things have changed. A lot of bad things have changed into good things and a lot of good things have changed into bad things. LIKE THE WEATHER 10 degrees cooler and rain!! that is definitely a bad change.

Maties won the final with 11-6 against the Pukke.

It was crazy busy at the Danie Craven stadium in Stellenbosch, and the half time show was a concert of the famous South African singer Kurt Darren.

Still catching up and i already have some fresh stuff waiting for you readers. But first i promised you the rest of my Garden Route trip.

I left last time at Tsitsikamma National Park, after this beautiful sight we hit the road for an other impressive experience. We were heading for the most Southern tip of the African Continent and i can assure you it was even more exciting as it sounds.

On the little monument was written in Afrikaans:" U is nou op die mees suidelike punt van die vasteland van afrika kaap L'agulhas".

That same day we drove all the way to Hermanus 200 KM down the coast. Hermanus is an old fishers town with the most beautiful beaches, we stayed there 2 days and got our beach mood on.

Last but not least we had the privilege of getting a ticket for the Robben Island on the Easter weekend. The Robben Island experience is a two hour tour over the island with all the information you could possibly think of. Of course we saw the 2 by 2 meter big cell where the infamous Mr Mandela spent 18 years as a political prisoner.

Last week Stellenbosch was a ghost town, all the South African student that take over Stellenbosch went back home to be with their family's or to celebrate the spring break.

I descided to make a big trip, because Stellenbosch was just as boring than being stuck in Amsterdam while it is winter and of course that is not what i want to show my mother and brother who came to visited me.

We chosen to see the east coast of South africa, the Garden Route to be precise. The Garden Route is a beautiful part of South Africa the idea of the Garden Route is that you drive over the N2 highway Between Cape Town and Port Elisabeth and just turn of the highway everywhere you want or where you think you would like it. The diversity of thing you can see on the Garden Route huge, from wine farms, beautiful beaches, wildlife, sea life, mountains, and villages/cities that are worth a visit.

We Flew to Port Elisabeth drive down to Cape Town in one of those Asian rentals with killing air conditioning. First up was the wildlife, we already had booked a 2 day safari with a private game park near Port Elisabeth called Schotia. These 2 days were already planned with numerous park drives through the Schotia park and the Addo elephant park.

Next up was Tsitsikamma Falls with it's Stormsriver. In the Tsisikamma area are a lot of adventures things to do like wildriver rafting, climbing, quad bikes and zip sliding. Zip sliding is sliding with some kind of zip over a steel cable from start to end over the Stromsriver. After the adventurous part we went to the Tsitsikamma national park with the storms river mouth in the sea. The national park is beautiful especially with the rope bridge over storms river, it felt like we were walking on the set of Lost

It has already 3 weeks ago that i posted my last adventure, the reason for this period of lazy blogging is that i had no time because a did so much stuff the last view weeks. Today i am going to start with the concert of Gold Fish at Spier and wine tour i did a view weeks ago.

Gold Fish is a South african band that plays a electronic slash african house kinda music.

they call them self a band but it's just 2 guys behind turntables, drum computers, synthesiser and they add some live music them self on chello's, flutes, piano, guitars you name it. Gold fish played live at Spier wine estate in a outdoor amphitheatre.

A week later is went for a Stellenbosch wine tour to some of the most famous wine farms of South Africa. The wine tour was a field trip for my wine course that i had last month, the wine course was 4 classes 1 field trip and a test on the end. The wine tour started at 8 o'clock on a Saturday so it was kid of strange to drink my first Cape classic (Champagne) of the day that early in the morning with a mild hangover.

We first visited Simonsig a large farm laying on the Simonsberg Mountain, a beautifull old farm with an even better views over the farms and mountains that are surrounding Stellenbosch.

At Simonsig we also got a big tour throughout the production process and the wine cellars.

An other wine farm we visited was Villiera also a large wine farm a bit further away from Stellenbosch. They believe Villiera was the first farm that started to make Cape Classic (Champagne) in South Africa but Simonsig tolled us the same. The Cape Classic was really good, better than simonsig, so i believe Villiera was first.

Canal Walk "Shop the world"

The biggest mall of the southern hemisphere just outside Cape Town, of course a must see if you ask me. So That's what we did we left Stellenbosch and went for a day shopping. One of the best things about Canal Walk is that it is open from 9 AM till 9 PM, and the mall has a huge diversity of shops. From really cheap to quiet expensive from hardware stores to music stores and has the biggest food corner i have ever seen. They have every thing and i mean every thing, they have KFC, Mac Donalds, Subway, Steers, fish restaurants, Debonair Pizza, Noodlebosch, Mexican restaurant, Spur (for the best ribs) and even Dros (great place to watch rugby and eat meat at the same time).

Saw this walking past my window the other day, pretty strange if you think of the fact that the beach is 30 minutes drive. He must been tired as hell.

One day later i discovered that he is in peace now. My dear friend got run over by what it looks like a big 4x4 tire. Damn those big gasoline drinking "bakkies".

Botmanskop

Botmanskop is the closest mountain to Stellenbosch that was partial on fire 2 weeks ago. On the very top of the mountain you have a stunning view over the flat grounds from Stellenbosch until Cape town, where all the wine farms are. On Saturday march 14 we came up with a great idea to sleep on top of the mountain, this looked easier then it was. First we had to find our way to the best spot to start hiking up, after we found the spot we parked our cars at the highest wine farm. First there was a path but that was not for long. After we past the last wine-field it was just rocks and loose sand. The sun was already starting to set so we decided to spent the night on a small braai area made by the owners of the farm. This was a perfect spot with a pick-nick table, flat ground and a place to make a very small fire.

Next morning we woke up at 5:30 because that is the time the sun comes up. After a very uncomfortable night on rocks and in the cold open air we were heading for the last part of the hike, to the top of the mountain.

We continued hiking but this part of the mountain was really rough with no path and only big rocks, small loose rocks and a view small trees to hold on. After a while we entered the part of the mountain that was on fire a week ago (see my FIRE!! post on 12 march). It was very steep, dirty and after a while a bit dangerous because after every step you took stones fall done. 25 meter from the top we decided to go back because it was getting steeper and steeper so it would be to difficult to climb down.

Rugby Update

I still have some rubgy matches that i watched but haven't posted yet.

1 Stormers match against the Blues from 2 weeks ago and 2 Stellenbosch Maties games from the Varsity cup.

The Maties is the Stellenbosch student rugby team, Matie (what is short for tomato) is the nickname for Stellenbosch students because of the university colour red.

The Maties play in a university rugby league throughout the country, the league is called the Varsity cup and is broadcasted on national television.

Other universities that play in the Varsity cup are: Cape Town (UCT), Johannesburg (UJ), Pretoria (TUKS), Bloemfontein (Shimla), Nelson mandela metropolitan university (NMMU),

North-west university (pukke) and Port elisabeth (TUT).

Maties - Pukke

On February the 23 Maties played there 4th match against the Pukke in Danie Craven stadium in Stellenbosch. The stadium was packed with maties fans, like every week. The matie won the game easily with 4 tries against 1 with a 31-10 score.

This monday the Maties played against the Nelson Mandela metropolitan university (NMMU).

This game was a lot more exciting than the game against Pukke, more runs, big hits and great tries. But this was probably because Pukke is 3th and NMMU 7th in the league and with Maties as defending champions was the match against NMMU a must win. The Maties won with 53-3.

Maties are now leading with not one single game lost and 27 point, second is Cape Town university with one lost game against the Maties in the season opening match.

Stormers - Blues

Saturday the 28 of February was the 3th super 14 clash for the Stormers in the season 2009.

The opponent this time was the Auckland Blues, a rugby team from Auckland New Zeeland.

Blues are have some well known all blacks players like captain Mealamu, Woodcock, Rokocoko and new talents like kaino and Mao.

Proper braai meat

After all these homemade braais and especially the braais made by international students, was it time for a real braai. Therefor we desided to try Sasoti (means kebab or spies) a afrikaans braai Restaurant. First you pick what kind of braai meat and then side dish like rice patato or pap. Pap is the afrikaans word for porrige really nice next to high flavoured braai meat. The food was really good and the meat was a lot tastier and soft then when fried or baked. The braai does the meat very good in every sence.

Since I arrived in Stellenbosch the Western coast of South Africa had to deal with a lot of fires, in my second weekend there were 90 fires and 2 deaths. Now it is Stellenbosch turn, a near by nature reserve called Jonkershoek is closed down for the week and even from my appartment you can see Jonkerhoek burning down very quickly.

One of the hot hot afternoons in the heat whave of last week we desided to cool down at a wine farm near Stellenbosch called Spier. Spier is not that famous for their wines but more for the beautifull picknick garden and the number of exotic animals kept on the farm.

Spier is just a 10 minutes drive from Stellenbosch and is really worth it. Stellenbosch does not have a lot of picknick places or parks and the botanical garden is not as larg and peacefull like Spier.

Sunday Park Concert

After a long, exciting and very very hot weekend is sunday the day to rest out.

Nice picknick in a beautifull park with some South African music on the backgroung, that's how the Capetoriens (Cape town people) handel the hangovers. Sunday is always a good day not to drink alcohol because of the fact that you are not allowed to buy alcohol on sunday, and the supermarkets on saturday close at 3PM so you have to plan your drinkng on sunday.

The park is a the biggest botanical garden of Cape Town called Kirstenbosch and has the most beautifull plant and birds. The park is located against the eastern slopes of the Table Mountain and in the park the hiking roads begins that go up the table mountain.

Stormers-Reds

An other week an other game, this week Cape Town Stormers aginst the Queensland Reds.

The reds stadium is based in Ballymore Australie. The reds is one of the four best rugby clubs from Australie, the Reds are now last in the super 14 tables and last year ended the season as number 12. The capetorians were pretty shure that the stormers would win the game and maybe even with a bonus point. The first half stormers had the attacking possition and was deffinitly the better team. The second half the stormers started really strong and doubled the score very fast from 10 - 5 to 27 - 5. Let's call it the second half of the second was the start of the game for the Reds. The Reds kept pushing on the Stormers try line and because of bad tackling and some brilliant moves from the Reds they were able to come back from 27 - 5 to 27 - 24. Road Trip

This Thursday we had the excellent idea to make a small road trip down the coast of the western cape. We started at Strand (30 minutes from Stellenbosch) and then drove allmost all the way down to Hermanus. We drove past beautifull mountains at our left and even better sunset views over the ocean at our right side. The trip was about 200 KM and it took as almost 4 hours.

That day there were around 90 fires in the western cape, 2 fire fighters died and army helicopters were used. The fires are really big because of the heat and the dry off course but mainly the seawind is the reason that it is really big and spreads.

Last Saturday I had the geat opportunity to watch my first super 14 match.

Super 14 is a rugby compitition for the 14 best rugby teams from South-Africa, Austalia and New Zeeland. Super 14 is a great compitition because it is the best club rugby in the world. High speed, great strenght, lighting fast speed and exciting plays makes it fun to watch for every body.

The Cape Town Stormers played there first Super 14 for this season against the Durban Sharks, both teams has a lot of international springbok players and 2007 word cup winners. The venue were it al started was the the Newlands rugby stadium and next to the rugby stadium you will find the Newland Cricket stadium. Both the rugby and the cricket stadium are beautifull from inside with a great old sports feeling. We had stading places behind the tryline suppose to be bad places (R40 = E3,2) but i really liked it. People were screaming jumping some people didn't dare to watch if there was a penalty kick, really dedicated fans.

The Sharks won the game with 20-15, the first half Stormers where deffinitly the better team with a 10-0 lead stormers ended the first half. In the second half everything went wrong in defence and offence, they didn't had there lucky penalties in there own 22 to save them and had not enough speed and strenght in the offence to make the difference. for more facts and info about the match http://www.super14.com/news/viewarticle.asp?id=18295 .

It was a great experience to see 50 000 people watching a rugby game and it feld so normal like it was a weekly thing, but back home when 50 000 people watch a rugby game it is very special. I hope this is going to be a weekly thing for me as well.

Week 2

Week 2 is a week were we did a lot of trips outside Stellenbosch with a rented car.

Day 1:

We rented the car for a week, for the first trip we did a trip to the wine farms.

We tasted at each farm 5 different voor 10 Rand same as 0.70 Euro.

The wine farm 'Kanonkop' is one of the biggest wine farms in South-Africa.

Day 2:

Town called Strand, nice beaches.

Day 3:

We went with the car all the way down to Gansbaai to go for a shark cage dive trip.

Gansbaai is the place where the white sharks live close to the beaches.

all the National Geographic documentairies about white sharks ar recorded at Gansbaai.

They life so close to the beaches because of 'the macdrive', is a small reef where more than

60 000 seals live. The most sharks come here in the high season, from May till August.

Day 4:

From 30 January till 1 Februari is carnaval, in the West Cape of South-Africa.

The carnaval is the end battle for the competition between the residents in Stellenbosch.

The fresh new students have to do all kind of different games like a trolly race, theatre plays, float parade, sporting games and a lot of parties. All the sreets have outside bars and there was a small festival on the grassfield, 'Die braak'.

Day 5 and Day 6:

The weekend we went to Cape Town, about a hour drive from Stellenbosch.

We booked a room in a hostel on Long street, Long street is the best street for clubs and for a restaurant. We vistited clubs, ate at restaurants, visited a very bigg mall and the last day we stayed at Camps bay. We went at 10 o'clock in the morning to the beaches at camps bay, but in the morning camps bay is coverd with fog. The fog clears up very slow because it is been pushed against the Table mountain.

Week 1

Week 1 was an exciting week got my self a place to live, got loads of information about living in Stellenbosch and the Stellenbosch university, and had a first impression of Cape Town.

I arrived in Stellenbosch on Tuesday 20 January but the only thing I didn't had was accomodation. But it didn't seem to be a big problem, the day after arrival I found my self a nice basic room with a sharing bathroom and livingroom/kitchen at the Academia university accomdation. 10 minutes walk from campus and 15 minutes from the center.

On Sunday 25th of January the university arranged a cape town tour for us, we went with a bus and had 3 stops. First the Signal point for a nice view, Camps bay the beach of Cape Town and the Waterfront the old harber with a shopping mall and a lot of restaurants.

Of cource my name is Luc and I am living for 6 months in Stellenbosch.

Luc is going to study at the University of Stellenbosch, play Rugby at the University of Stellenbosch and do al kind of fun things in and around Stellenbosch.

Stellenbosch is the second oldest town of South-Africa, it is was founded in 1679 by the Dutch people who came to South-Africa to creating supply stations for the trading ships to Asia. After a while when the French also came to South-Africa Stellenbosch got very important because it had great soil and landscape for making wine. After more than 300 years you can still see the different influences by different countries. For example the Dutch buildings, the language (Afrikaans), the wine and also the British influences like rugby and cricket.

Today Stellenbosch is a well-known student town with a population of more than 150 000 and 40 000 of them are students. Stellenbosch is not only well known for the university but also for rugby. Stellenbosch university a.k.a Maties is one of the biggest rugby club in the world there for stellenbosch is a big rugby town. Stellenbosch is just an hour drive from Cape Town a stone throw away from the beach,
